12:20 PM - 1:10 PM:  Are Traditional Value Allocations Misunderstood

Phil DeSantis, CFA
Senior Vice President, Head of Product Management - Westwood Holdings Group

1 CFP, CPA, CIMA CE

Westwood believes traditional value allocations are often misunderstood by many investors. Historically many advisors have shifted to traditional value strategies in an effort perform better in down markets with the expectations of avoiding high beta or high valuations in the growth asset class. As accounting rules and the types of assets that create value for many companies have made Price to Book and even PE ratio’s a flawed metric in and by itself. This has led to secular underperformance in traditional value factors as whole and has disappointed many investors who expect to perform better in down markets simply by owning undervalued companies.

Our goal for the session is to help advisors better understand how quality is a way of investing in the value asset class to achieve better performance during periods of economic distress with more consistent performance long-term. Our presentation will analyze the challenges with traditional valuation factors both historically and more recently during the downturn due to COVID-19. We will also discuss what it means to invest at the intersection of quality and value resulting from “true” economics profits that can result in a potential return premium for investors long-term.

Mr. DeSantis joined Westwood in December 2015 as Senior Vice President, Head of Marketing and Product Management. He is responsible for the planning, development and execution of the firm’s marketing, communications, product management and product development initiatives. Mr. DeSantis joins the firm with over 17 years of experience across sales and distribution, product management, strategic marketing and strategy. Prior to joining Westwood, Mr. DeSantis worked at PNC Capital Advisors, LLC, in Chicago, Illinois, as a Managing Director serving as a product specialist and practice leader. He also served as Director, Senior Product Specialist at UBS Global Asset Management and Vice President for their Multi-Asset and Liquid Alternative Strategies and Senior Product Manager for Northern Trust Asset Management in Chicago, Illinois. Mr. DeSantis earned his BS in Finance from Arizona State University. Additionally, he is a member of the CFA Institute and a Registered Securities Representative (FINRA Series 6, 7 and 63).
