3:10 - 4:00 PM : What is the IRS Thinking in 2020?

Abbey Garber:  Partner, Thompson & Knight, LLP

1.0 CFP, CPA, CIMA CE

This year has been unique, to say the least, particularly with regard to the massive legislation that Congress and the Trump administration have already passed - the PPP loan program, employment tax deferral, and individual rebates, just to name a few. How will the IRS balance their new responsibilities with their existing work, while returning from a near shutdown of enforcement activities? Where will the IRS focus its resources, especially when it comes to high-net-worth individuals?  Learning objectives:

• An overview and understanding of various changes from the IRS resulting from recent legislation

• Tips on how to navigate tax requirements for high-net-worth individuals

• What you should expect from the IRS going forward

• Determining if you or your clients are at risk for audit in this uncertain environment

About the speaker:   Abbey Garber is a Partner in the Tax Practice at Thompson & Knight LLP. He focuses his practice on tax litigation and providing advice in connection with applying tax laws to individuals, estates, corporations, and partnerships. Serving more than 30 years in the Office of Chief Counsel at the Internal Revenue Service, he tried cases of all sizes in Tax Court, earning significant favorable opinions in fraud, tax shelter, and many other cases; received a full Tax Court opinion in an attorneys' fees case; and prosecuted criminal tax cases in United States District Court as a Special Assistant United States Attorney. Abbey served as the Southwest Area Team Leader in Chief Counsel, charged with ensuring collaboration and cooperation across operating divisions in a nine-state area.

Guest Speaker:  Cozy Wittman, Director of Education & Partnerships - College Inside Track

1.0 CFP, CPA, CIMA CE

There is no purchase as significant as college that families -- and financial advisors -- comparatively know as little about. The significant increase in cost and complexity – especially in the new COVID-19 world -- has families desperate for answers, and offers advisors a tremendous opportunity to provide value. Late-stage college planning is much more than 529 plans, and understanding this hot topic better can elevate you and your practice. You will not want to miss hearing a national expert share specific strategies every financial professional should know about to help families navigate the complicated college process and save tens of thousands of dollars.  Learning objectives:

• Share with clients little-known, actionable strategies to save families money on the college purchase

• Advise clients on new college planning strategies in the COVID-19 world

• Understand how to effectively negotiate with colleges

About the speaker:  Cozy Wittman leads the education and partnerships for College Inside Track, an organization that helps families navigate the college process and save lots of money. She is considered a national subject-matter expert on late-stage college planning and trains financial professionals around the country on strategies they can use to better serve clients. In addition to being a featured speaker at financial services conferences and high schools, Cozy is a mom of 5 kids with very different goals for college so she is no stranger to the college search challenge.
