Changing the Probability of Winning for Active Investors

    Philip DeSantis, CFA
Senior VP, Head of Marketing & Product Management - Westwood

The severe loss of confidence in active managers’ ability to generate alpha, “net of fees” and the current asymmetric disadvantage to investors is evident as indexing-type product popularity ballooned to $9.6T worldwide in 2018.  During this period of dominance by passive products, the relationship between asset owners and investment managers has transformed, increasing fee pressures to improve alignment over existing fee structures. While overall fees have come down over the last decade, the industry has done very little to truly level the playing field for investors and solve the real problem — aligning fees to the value of active management and improving the probability of a favorable outcome depending on manager skill and the efficiency of the asset class.  Westwood believes the industry is primed for disruption in order to realign both mathematically and psychologically with investors. We feel advisors should be able to invest in products that can deliver beta at a low cost and have the potential to generate alpha ,while aligning active fees to improve the probability of outperformance and achieving more favorable outcomes.

Detailed in Westwood’s DeSantis’s whitepaper, Mission [Possible]: Changing the Probability of Winning for Active Investors, and his latest paper Changing the Probability of Winning for Alternative Income Investors, Westwood outlines Sensible Fees Solutions™, a simple and innovative fee structure that is part of a new philosophy and product initiative to change the probability of winning across and leveling the playing field with ETFs in asset classes such as US LargeCap, US SMIDCap, Multi-Asset and Alternatives. The paper discusses the impact for active investors new innovative fee structures vs. traditional fixed fees.  Advisors attending will benefit from our approach to outlining fee constructs in the context of probability to better improve how they asses manager potential and overall asset allocation decision between the value of alpha and beta.

Mr. DeSantis joined Westwood in December 2015 as Senior Vice President, Head of Marketing and Product Management. He is responsible for the planning, development and execution of the firm’s marketing, communications, product management and product development initiatives. Mr. DeSantis joins the firm with over 17 years of experience across sales and distribution, product management, strategic marketing and strategy. Prior to joining Westwood, Mr. DeSantis worked at PNC Capital Advisors, LLC, in Chicago, Illinois, as a Managing Director serving as a product specialist and practice leader. He also served as Director, Senior Product Specialist at UBS Global Asset Management and Vice President for their Multi-Asset and Liquid Alternative Strategies and Senior Product Manager for Northern Trust Asset Management in Chicago, Illinois.  Mr. DeSantis earned his BS in Finance from Arizona State University. Additionally, he is a member of the CFA Institute and a Registered Securities Representative (FINRA Series 6, 7 and 63).
