Letter's from the 2017 FPA DFW President

January 2017

Happy New Year!

As the 2017 President of FPA of Dallas/Fort Worth I am excited and energized by the work our leadership is doing on your behalf for the year ahead.  After planning sessions at our Strategic Planning Day and at the OneFPA Chapter Leaders Conference, together our chapter leaders identified three areas on which we will focus in 2017: Engagement, Education and Leadership Pipeline.

These three areas present different opportunities for each of us. Consider how you can share your expertise and passion in one or more of these areas:

Through FPA we have the opportunity to engage in our organization, in our community, and with our peers. Whether your desire is to help others, support the profession, share your compassion, bring new perspectives to others, or explore your strengths - there is a place for you! Would you like to mentor a high school student? Create a community within our community by forming a study group? Advocate on behalf of our financial planning profession at the Capitol? These are only small sample of ways you can enrich your own FPA experience. Watch for opportunities on our website, in your inbox, and at our chapter meetings.

The 2017 FPA DFW Conference has grown to be a full two days of education and networking with leading practitioners and subject matter experts from around the country.  The conference is quickly becoming recognized as one of the premier learning opportunities in the country.  We have added specialized content to both our conference and chapter meetings and expanded our stand-alone programs.  Be sure to check out a monthly NexGen event, quarterly networking mixer, bonus session or specialty study group this year.

While our focus remains on continuing education, we have the ability to create public awareness and educate the public about our profession and the value of financial planning through a number of outlets. We strive to be the go-to source for both national and local media; you can read our members quoted in the Wall Street Journal and Dallas Morning News newspapers and see their appearances on various local television news programs. In addition to reaching the public through the media we offer in-person and virtual education to the public through our annual Dallas Morning News “Ask a CFP” Hotline and Junior Achievement programs at local high schools.

Leadership Pipeline

The lifeblood of FPA of Dallas/Fort Worth is our volunteers and our volunteer leaders. Having a leadership pipeline is essential to continual growth and development of our leaders.   This leadership pipeline begins at the committee level, doing all we can to connect with interested potential committee members and aligning their passions with opportunities for leadership.  We recognize the importance to equip our volunteers with the tools and support to continue to grow their leadership skills in tangible ways. As a part of this effort, in 2017 I have challenged each directorship to make leadership development a focus with their respective committees.

To the extent you have an interest in serving in a leadership role within FPA of Dallas/Fort Worth, please let me know – I would love to connect with you and hear about particular areas for which you are passionate.

I am eager to start 2017 but I want to express my gratitude to all who make our chapter one of the finest in the country. A heartfelt thank you to my mentors Dennis Moore (2016 Chair) and Rett Dean (2016 President), and to Melisa Hall (Executive Director), the board of directors, and committee members for their dedication and diligent work to better our chapter.

I want to encourage you to consider how you will be a part of engaging in our community this year. What we can accomplish together in our organization is so much more than we can do alone.

All my best,

Brandon Ratzlaff, CFP®
2017 FPA DFW President
